I also practice yoga and have good strong practice, and I began to notice that my right hip was troubling me. Over the course of about 2 years, I saw several orthopedists who all told me the same thing, which is that I was looking at a hip replacement at some point. I wanted to put that off as long as I could, so I tried many different things, including: acupuncture, chiropractic, cupping therapy, and cortisone shots. The cortisone helped a LITTLE bit but not much. I finally decided I couldn't take it anymore--I thought hip replacement therapy was for old people, and meanwhile, I was acting like an old person! (I'm 53.) I was limping, I had a hard time getting up and moving around, and my yoga practice was REALLY suffering. So I met with an excellent surgeon and had the surgery and everything is great!

I guess I learned to take action and stop suffering!!! The best thing I heard after my surgery: The day of my surgery (!) the physical therapist came to get me up walking around (!) and he told me not to baby the new joint. That really helped me a lot because I think the tendency is to put all the weight on the other leg and he told me not to do that--that my new hip was very strong. I walked around unassisted the day after my surgery, although I did end up using a cane for about a week just to help distribute the weight evenly between legs.

I'm 12 weeks post-op, and am so happy I did it. If I didn't know I had a hip replacement, I would never know it. And I thank you Lois for all your help. I went back to yoga about 5 weeks after surgery and took it easy and modified as necessary.
